TPH: A Brand New and Universal Tissue Paper Holder

Introducing the Innovative TPH Design by OTAKA NORIKO

Inspired by the need to incorporate tissue paper seamlessly into any interior design, OTAKA NORIKO has created the TPH, a beautiful and functional tissue paper holder that adds a touch of elegance to any room.

Tissue paper is often overlooked in interior design, relegated to the sidelines due to its lack of aesthetic appeal. However, OTAKA NORIKO aims to change that with their innovative TPH design. Made with eco-friendly materials and built to last, this tissue paper holder is not just a practical solution but also a stylish addition to your living space.

The TPH features a unique reverse U-shaped form that not only reduces its width but also allows for smooth and effortless paper retrieval. Crafted by a skilled Japanese craftsman known for their expertise in wallet-making, the TPH combines functionality with a modern aesthetic. As we move towards a cashless society, the TPH aims to become a part of the new wave of leather products, replacing traditional wallets.

One of the key challenges in designing the TPH was creating a form that was both visually appealing and practical. The use of metal, specifically aluminum for the upper body and steel for the lower body, adds a touch of sophistication while ensuring durability. The sewing process was also a meticulous task, with each part of the sewing machine being specially designed for this unique product.

With its environmentally friendly materials and timeless design, the leather model of the TPH is built to last as a piece of furniture. Its versatility allows it to seamlessly blend into any interior design, making it a must-have accessory for those who value both style and functionality.

The TPH design project began in Tokyo in August 2017 and was completed in June 2018. It was later exhibited at the Art Museum area of Gift Show Tokyo in September 2018, garnering attention for its innovative approach to tissue paper storage.

OTAKA NORIKO's research for the TPH design focused on finding the most efficient way to store tissue paper while ensuring ease of use. The reverse U-shaped form was chosen to accommodate papers of varying sizes, with the ideal amount being 100 to 120 sheets, resulting in a thickness of approximately 3cm. Additionally, the use of vegetable-tanned Italian and Japanese leathers was a conscious decision to minimize waste and prioritize sustainability.

The TPH design overcame several challenges, including finding the right balance between weight and ease of paper retrieval. Collaboration with a Japanese sheet metal manufacturing town factory and skilled leather craftsmen was instrumental in achieving the desired shape and functionality. The result is a design that challenges the conventional notion of hiding tissue paper and instead presents it as a stylish and integral part of the room's decor.

The TPH design has been recognized for its ingenuity and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate exceptional technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With its utility model registration in Japan and its accolades, the TPH design by OTAKA NORIKO is a testament to the innovative and universally appealing nature of this tissue paper holder. Say goodbye to hiding tissue paper and embrace a stylish and functional solution with the TPH.
